Two items recently posted from original sites to the NYCSkyline board (one of my links at http://www.put.com/wtc/ of course) are of interest: Paul Goldberger has written in the New Yorker (which hired him away from the NY Times) an article that knocks the Twin Towers and also takes a pot shot at Edward Durell Stone...who happens to be one of my favorite modern architects.I guess I shouldn't be surprised. More recently,the NY Daily News has published http://www.nydailynews.com/news/ideas_opinions/story/65799p-61295c.html where megamemorialist loudmouth Jack Lynch makes his usual extremist demand for the WTC site to be a cemetery above all else. PLEASE WRITE CRITICALLY to voicers@edit.nydailynews.com to refute his so-called reasoning.Read the article first,of course. Points: That the ground was "consecrated" by the murders to some purpose other than it was used for before is empty rhetoric...remember Michael Flocco,whose son Matthew was killed at the Pentagon,where more people were killed than in Oklahoma City and some bodies were never recovered, who labored to completely restore the building where his son died to be just as it was,only stronger than ever. Moving the remains away from the medical examiner's office would make it harder for identifications to continue. The scenes of mass murders are as a rule never used as cemeteries for those who were killed. France,Greece,and Italy (which he appeals to as examples) are no exception to this...they have proudly rebuilt devastated areas for the purposes for which they were used before the destruction...from the Acropolis sacked by the ancient Persians to the cities restored after World War II. Allowing the memorial to dominate the 16 acres is allowing the killers to continue to dominate New York. It would be more appropriate to take the remains to an existing cemetery than empower the killers to turn the Financial District into a new one. Pataki's unwise promises to the self-selected minority of particularly-emotionally-overwrought family members must be held against him,not regarded as reasonable. Don't let his claim of "moral authority" go uncorrected! Also noted recentyl at NYCS is a NY Times article about how Bloomberg appointees have often missed board meetings about the rebuilding efforts. The recent letter column http://www.nypost.com/postopinion/letters/31803.htm was very anti-Libeskind again. We need to keep resistance active and visible, combat the "the decision's been made,so shut up" mentality that officials try desperately to project. It didn't work over a year ago when they said tall towers were inappropriate.
